Steve Ghosley Checks It OutThe Mazda RX-8 has made a significant impact in its market sector since it was first launched back in 2003. More than 16,300 have been delivered to UK customers in its first three years and it has won prestigious awards like What Cars Best Coupe 2006. To keep the model fresh and to keep sales ticking over, Mazda have launched their first special edition of the RX-8 called Evolve. This is the same name as the original concept car first seen at the Detroit Motor Show in 2000. Mazda have limited the number of Evolve models available in the UK to only 500, making this RX-8 fairly exclusive and unique. Build

{'rating_Value'}.gif'> Four-door coupes are pretty thin on the ground, the term practically reading like a contradiction, but this one has been carefully thought out. The rear-hinged back doors create a pillarless profile and despite their truncated dimensions, allow easy entry and egress to and from the rear pair of seats. Its an idea that Rolls-Royce adopted for their Phantom and it works very well. The doors may attract the causal observer but as anybody who knows anything about Mazdas RX series of cars knows, the real Unique Selling Proposition lies under the bonnet in the form of a compact rotary engine. This RX-8 Evolve comes with a high-powered 231PS engine, the more powerful of the two available with the standard car, and is priced at £23,900 - which is the same price as the standard model with a leather interior. Two paint finishes will be available. Copper Red Mica, of which 400 models will be available and Phantom Blue Mica which covers the bodywork of the remaining 100 cars. They have certainly gone to town in making the RX-8 look very distinctive. It features unique dark silver 18 x 8J alloy wheels, a polished aluminium rotary crest on the front air dam, dark silver bezel headlamps, sports door mirrors, polished aluminium side air outlet fins, stylish Rotary branded B-pillar trims, chrome exhaust surrounds and Evolve badging. Inside, the Evolve features unique stone leather and Alcantara sports seat trims, plus a black leather-wrapped steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever. Rather than use a conventional internal combustion engine in which a number of pistons pump up and down in their respective cylinders to provide the motive power, a rotary engine like the one used by Mazda instead adopts a completely different engineering solution. Two triangular rotors spin in ellipsoidal chambers which, as any student engineer will attest, is a very elegant theory. Why? Because constantly spinning a rotor is a far more efficient use of energy than the wasteful, reciprocating motion of a piston accelerating from 0mph at the end of its travel up to around 40mph and then decelerating to 0mph at the other end of the cylinder, all in the space of a hundredth of a second. Thats the theory. In fact rotary engines have a reputation for being thirsty, dirty and difficult to maintain. Mazda claim to have addressed these issues with the latest RENESIS engine found in the RX-8, the powerplant winning the 2003 Engine Of The Year award in fact. As well as the traditional virtues of rotary engines, namely their smooth revving nature, their low weight and their flat, broad spread of torque, Mazda have ironed out many of the bugbears. The efficiency of the engine has been improved by a fundamental redesign of the way air and fuel are pulled into the combustion chamber and the way that exhaust gases are ported out. Cleanliness has been improved as well, with unburnt hydrocarbons being recycled back into the chamber for another torching. As regards durability, Mazda have worked hard to exorcise the demon of rotor tip wear using high tech materials and having a clear understanding of the thermodynamics at work in the engine. The result is an engine that can rev to 9,000rpm without ever feeling strained. It settles to a hum at idle but then just zings straight up to the redline with turbine-like smoothness. If anything, this RX-8 feels a good deal livelier than its rest to 60mph showing of 6.4 seconds would suggest. The chassis offers the same sort of taut feel that made the last RX-7 such a favourite amongst those who appreciated a proper rear-wheel drive sports car. Although RX-7 diehards groaned with disappointment when they saw that their darling was being replaced by a car with four seats and a more upright profile, the result is a more rounded car in every sense of the word. Yes, the sensitivity of the steering and the feedback through the seat of your pants has been dialled back a few degrees, but the RX-8 still knows how to entertain in a way thats proved beyond the ken of cars like the Audi TT and the Mercedes C-class Sports Coupe. Fuel consumption still isnt what youd describe as stellar, although its certainly a good deal less thirsty than the RX-7. Officially you can average 24.3mpg although in reality, it will require a very disciplined right foot to return such figures over the course of an ownership spell. The RX-8 is one of those cars with an infectious nature that tempts you into frequent right boot to the bulkhead progress. The Mazda RX-8 Evolve special edition may be a little avant-garde for some tastes but this desirable four-door coupe brings radical design and innovative technology within the budgets of many. Its a car that rewards a little adventure like few others. Practical yet potent, well equipped and also extremely easy on the eye, the RX-8 Evolve special edition should help keep buyers interested in Mazdas unique sportscar. Four large wheels and tires, located at each corner of the body, result in ultra-short overhangs, accentuating the visual impact created by the unique sculpturing of the body contours. The shape of the body also expresses the ideal front/rear weight distribution made possible by the use of the compact rotary engine. In addition, the Double Clamshell Hood covering the engine compartment visually focuses attention on the center midship layout of the rotary engine, which is positioned behind the front axle. The RENESIS, Mazda's new-generation rotary engine, is mounted in the RX-EVOLV. The RENESIS stands for "The RE (Rotary Engine)'s GENESIS" or the rotary engine for the new millennium. The engine produces 280 PS (206 kW) at 9,000 rpm (target value) and 23.0 kg-m (226 Nm) at 8,000 rpm (target value), the highest power density ever achieved by a naturally aspirated rotary engine for a road-going automobile. The RENESIS is designed to qualify for stringent LEV (Japanese Low Emission Vehicle) standards, soon to be implemented, by greatly reducing major pollutants in the exhaust gas to very low levels.Designed as a canopy, the cabin is visually separated from the body by the shoulder line, creating cockpit-like styling. A twin-bubble Aerowave Roof, reminiscent of the current RX-7, improves airflow over and around the body. Up front, extremely-thin Micro-HID (High-Illumination Discharge) lamps are mounted under the aerodynamic wing, providing a bright beam inside the front opening. When illuminated, the small protrusions around the round lamps emit a red light like the afterburners of a jet. Controls, switches and pedals are designed and arranged for quick operation during driving, while large dials are logically located for easy recognition. The most frequently used instruments, such as tachometer, speedometer and shift indicator, are set in the center of the dial cluster. Auxiliary gauges are displayed in the multi-mode display in the center of the instrument panel. The individual "Lightweight Sports Mesh Seats," provide excellent support and breatheability, for the RX-EVOLV's four occupants. In addition, the passenger-side rear seat incorporates a built-in, fold-down "Integrated Child Seat" and a detachable "Baby Pad."The RX-EVOLV employs an innovative "Freestyle Door System" without central pillarsprovides easier access to the rear seats than that offered by conventional sedans. The large front door features a double-action hinge: first the door extends out and forward, then it rotates to open. The rear doors are rear-hinged and open 90 degrees, creating a wide opening area. This greatly improves entry to and exit from the rear seats, making it much easier to get a child belted in, and to load or unload luggage. An electronic safety lock system prevents a rear door from opening from inside unless the same-side front door is opened.Ultra-light, highly-rigid, 5-spoke, 20-inch magnesium wheels are matched with low-profile tires featuring an unidirectional asymmetrical pattern based on the wet-weather tires used in Formula 1 racing. The 19-inch, front and rear ventilated disc brake rotors are made from highly heat-resistant, aluminum-composite materials. Each front brake has a 6-piston caliper, while 4-piston calipers are used at the rear. The braking system also incorporates a 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC).An Active Cornering Brake (ACB) system is used to further improve the excellent cornering ability of the vehicle. ACB controls the brake force at each wheel individually, allowing the driver, by pressing a pad switch on the steering wheel spokes, to vary the brake force (and thus the yawing moment) on the inner tires during cornering. This enables the driver to alter the handling characteristics of the vehicle from understeer to neutral to oversteer. Based on personal information stored on the IC chip, the ID Access System controls engine output and actuation of the Active Cornering Brake system as a function of driver skill level. By regulating the engine management system and the electronic throttle, maximum output and torque are limited to 240 PS at 8,000 rpm and to 21.0 kg-m at 7,000 rpm, respectively. In addition, the transmission's shift schedule in the automatic-shifting mode is controlled to match the engine's power and torque characteristics, resulting in smoother shifting and improved fuel economy. On slippery surfaces the system also modulates the 4W-ABS and the DSC for added stability and security. It even cuts off the ACB when required. The wheels are equipped with sensors to detect the loss of tire pressure - a warning lamp on the instrument panel informing the driver when the pressure falls below a specified level. And the tires are a run-flat design, allowing the driver to continue until the tire can be safely changed.Advanced passive safety measures, including the highly rigid body, Mazda's Advanced Impact-energy Absorption and Distribution System, and the Smart airbags, are designed to minimize the impact of accidents on occupants.Year:1999Engine:Water-cooled rotaryPower:206 kWTransmission:6 speed auto-manual0-60:n/aTop speed:n/a Related LinksMazda UK Websitehttp://www.mazda.co.ukMazda Japan Websitehttp://www.mazda.co.jp home | about 21C | directory | mind | science | technology | environment | robotics | space | games | humour | gadgets | cars | music | masters ~ The 21st Century Group ~ The Elstree Film School | 21newmedia.com : Web Design Training Courses | 21biz.co.uk : Business Training Courses | 21stcentury.co.uk : The Technology News Portal | New Media Jobs in Herts | Training CDs Herts Music Network | Elstree Film Talent | St Albans Business Club | St Albans Creative Club | New Age Music News Copyright © 1995 - 2010 21st Century New Media Ltd.
